The Angel Hierarchy
In her book ‘A Little Light on Angels’, Diana Cooper says that it is widely believed that angels were created by the divine Source before human beings, and that when humans were created, some of the lower orders of angels were delegated to look after us.
There are various ideas about the orders of angels, but most people believe that there are three sets of three:
In the first, highest sphere are the Seraphim, Cherubim and Thrones.
In the second sphere are the Dominions, Virtues and Powers.
In the third sphere are the Principalities, Archangels and Angels.
The essence of the Seraphim is pure love. Their role is to praise the Creator constantly, so maintaining the vibration of creation. They channel energy from the Source. Only these high level beings can withstand the power of this God-force.
The Cherubim are angels of wisdom and spread the light from this God-force. They are guardians of the stars and the heavens.
The Thrones are guardians of the planets. Ezekiel, the Hebrew prophet, describes them as flaming torches, and others have depicted them as having many eyes.
Diana Cooper says, ‘The trio, Seraphim, Cherubim and Thrones, receives direct illumination from Source and they transform the light in order to transmit it at a level that can be accepted by lower orders in the Universe.’
The Dominions oversee those angels at a lower level than themselves and channel mercy. Although they rarely connect with human beings, they ease communication between the spiritual and the material worlds.
The Virtues send out light accessible to humans and enable miracles to occur. If a group of people raises its vibration to tune into angel energy, these people can access information which the Virtues radiate, thus helping the rise in consciousness of the New Age.
The Powers include those who oversee such occasions as Birth and Death of humans, as well as the Lords of Karma.
Principalities protect nations, cities and any large group of people although, since they work throughout the universe, our planet, and human beings, are only a small part of their domain.
The Archangels lead bands of angels. Those particularly associated with Earth are Michael, Gabriel, Raphael and Uriel.
[For more on these four Archangels and others, see ‘Angels to call upon’.]
The Angels are those who are closest to humans. They include our guardian angels – although it is not uncommon for someone to be given the name of an archangel when meeting their guardian angel in meditation - as well as angels of such qualities as light, love, healing, peace, purity, beauty and truth. This is also where we can find angels of art, music and literature as well as those who help us in our everyday lives, such as parking angels!
Angels to call upon.
Michael
Michael’s name translates from the Hebrew as ‘Look like God’. He will give us strength when we are facing opposition, will assist in resolving any personal negativity, and help us stand strong when feeling alone or like an outsider. He is the patron saint of policemen and soldiers, and watches over pilgrims and strangers. The Prince of the Heavenly Armies, he fights for right and justice and guides all those who are in dire situations. He also brings patience and happiness.
In Jacky Newcomb’s Angel Treasury she suggests we call on Michael to help mend broken appliances and problems, for money worries, and insomnia.
Gabriel
Gabriel means ‘God is my Strength’. He stands for truth so can help us to express our truth honestly, respect our individuality, and listen to our inner voice of intuition. The patron saint of mothers and small children, he protects all that is natural and pure in us. All religions recognise Gabriel as the messenger from Source. He is known as the Angel of Revelation, Bringer of Good News, Judgement and Mercy, the Angel of Joy and Spirit of Truth.
Jacky suggests calling on Gabriel to help with arguments or legal wrangles, pregnancy, childbirth, childcare, adoptions, communications, and creativity.
Raphael
Raphael, meaning ‘God Heals’ or ‘Divine Healer’, is usually pictured with a staff or caduceus entwined with a snake. He heals through joy, and can help us heal ourselves, others or the universe. He enables us to see the healing lessons in illness, so that we may gain access to his Divine gifts. He is known as the Overseer of the Evening Winds, Guardian of the Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden, Angel of Repentance, Love, Joy and Light, and also of Healing, Science and Knowledge, and of Providence. He watches over all humanity. As well as being the main Angel of Healing, he is the patron saint of travellers.
Jacky suggests calling on Raphael for those in the caring professions, if we need healing for ourselves or others, for grief, dying, care of the dying and of the bereaved, and for any problems involving travelling or transport.
Uriel
Uriel -‘Light of God’ - is the most radiant of the archangels. By aiding our knowledge and understanding, he helps us recognise the light in others. Known as the Prince of Light, Flame of God, Angel of the Presence, and Angel of Salvation, he also watches over thunder and terror. He helps us understand the laws of karma, and God’s Divine mercy in which everyone is loved and cherished by God. He helps us understand why things sometimes go wrong and to trust in the Divine plan. He also helps us interpret our dreams and hear our inner voice.
Jacky’ suggestions are to call on Uriel for help with anything to do with the earth, such as gardening, farming, or sick plants, learning, studying for exams, interviews, speeches, and any form of technology such as computers.
Other archangels:
Ariel (overseer of Nature), Azrael (angel of death), Chamuel (gatekeeper to the World , peace and protection), Haniel (Angel of the Moon), Jeremiel (overseer of souls), Jophiel (angel of paradise and creativity), Metatron (formerly Enoch the prophet, Keeper of the Akashic records, helper for relationships and careers), Raguel (Angel of Earth, creates harmony),Raziel (Angel of mysteries, has scientific knowledge), Sandalphon (formerly Elijah the prophet, twin of Metatron, carries humans’ prayers to God), Sariel (Angel of the Sun, keeps watch over the ‘children’ of mankind, also known as an angel of healing), Zadkiel (Angel of mercy and forgiveness).
